Construction of the world's tallest building, 1008 meters, is about to begin in Saudi Arabia.

Updated: Jun 5

A recent report from the Dubai-based Middle East Economic Digest (MEED) magazine noted that competition for the construction of the Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia is intensifying.

According to news confirmed to MEED by Talal Ibrahim Almaiman, CEO of Kingdom Holding Company (KHC), the construction contract for the project is expected to be awarded soon.

According to Almaiman, The bidding included a joint venture between Saudi engineering Company El Seif and China State Construction Engineering Corporation, Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) of Lebanon and Mohammed Abdulmohsin Al of Kuwait Kharafi & Sons and its international partners.

According to sources close to the project, the joint venture between El Seif and China State Construction Engineering Corporation is seen as a frontrunner and is highly likely to be awarded the project.

The Jeddah Tower is a towering structure with the highest observation deck in the world.

Located in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the tower, designed by AS+GG, has a tapered building with a triangular base inspired by native flowers found in the arid desert.

The tower structure is covered in smooth glass with indentations on the sides, tapering to the spire.

The construction of the Jeddah Tower showcases Saudi Arabia's ambitions in the fields of architecture and engineering, as well as its efforts to modernize the country and develop its tourism industry.

Originally, the height of the project was about 1,600 meters, but due to problems with geology and construction difficulties, it was later revised to 1,008 meters.

Construction began in 2013, but stalled in 2018, when the building had already reached 63 floors.

After overcoming various challenges, including geological issues, labor issues and the COVID-19 pandemic, construction of the Jeddah Tower officially resumed in September 2023.

Currently, the tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which is 828 meters high.

With the restart of the Jeddah Tower project, Saudi Arabia is expected to reclaim the title of the world's tallest building. This will mark an important advance for Saudi Arabia in the global architecture and engineering sector, while also further boosting the country's economic growth and international image.

The completion of the Jeddah Tower will become a landmark building in Saudi Arabia, attracting tourists and investors from all over the world, which in turn will promote the prosperity of the local tourism and economic development.
