On March 31st, Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed support for the establishment of integrated entertainment complexes including legalized casinos,
emphasizing that relying solely on abundant natural resources is insufficient to address current economic challenges.
He warned that without taking this step, capital flows would completely divert to neighboring countries, potentially reducing Thailand to a place solely for prayer and offering.
Anutin noted that Parliament has already passed a research report on legalizing such entertainment complexes aimed at combating illegal gambling and safeguarding national economic interests.
He stressed that amid intensifying global competition, Thailand faces immense pressure, and without action, wealth and prosperity could flow to neighboring countries.
Addressing criticisms concerning religious beliefs and social morality, Anutin explained that these entertainment complexes are not just gambling venues but include various facilities such as tourist attractions, hotels, and dining establishments.
Despite the inclusion of gambling venues, their operation would be strictly regulated by laws, including provisions prohibiting entry for individuals under 18 years old.
He acknowledged the government's need to strengthen religious management to ensure social order and moral standards.
Anutin further stated that the current era prioritizing economics demands Thailand to develop under the rule of law.
He emphasized the necessity for Thailand to simultaneously focus on economic development and law enforcement to safeguard national interests.
Regarding specific implementation locations for the entertainment complexes, he mentioned that local governments would decide based on their willingness to increase investments.
In addition to these points, Anutin elaborated on the real challenges Thailand faces and the necessary reform measures.
He pointed out that with rapid global economic development, Thailand needs to diversify experiences in tourism and entertainment to attract more international tourists and investors.
He stressed that legalizing entertainment complexes aims not only to attract gamblers but also to enhance overall tourism service standards and national image.
Discussing financial benefits, Anutin highlighted that legalized entertainment complexes would generate substantial tax revenues for the country.
These revenues could be used to improve infrastructure, education, and social welfare projects, thus enhancing the well-being of the entire population.
He emphasized that the government would rigorously regulate gambling activities to ensure fairness and justice and take measures to protect vulnerable groups from the negative effects of gambling.
Finally, Anutin called for understanding and support from all sectors of society for the construction of entertainment complexes, recognizing their potential for economic and social development while maintaining adherence to legal and moral standards.
He underscored that Thailand would continue to uphold principles of the rule of law and sustainable development, promoting the country's economy towards greater prosperity and sustainability.
