India produces its own Tesla, and a "Tesla Power" battery manufacturer has emerged in India.

Updated: Jun 5

Tesla founder Elon Musk made a "surprise visit" to Beijing on April 28, a move that has aroused great sensitivities in India.

In the days before that, Musk canceled a planned visit to India, including a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The situation has become particularly sensitive in India because the country is in the midst of a new round of elections, and the loss of the Modi government's partnership with Musk, a business legend, is a bad sign for them.

There is a saying in India: "India makes money, India spends money", which means that India should benefit from its own domestic economy, and the Indian currency should also have sufficient foreign exchange reserves.

So Musk's decision makes business sense.

However, India has a different view, and even the Indian domestic media has begun to shout that the Modi government will not easily forgive Musk.

Recently, Reuters reported a story headlined "Tesla vs. Tesla: U.S. automaker sues Indian Company of the same name for infringement," suggesting that India's counterattack may already be underway.

In the past two years, a battery manufacturer called Tesla Power has emerged in India, operating under the brand names "Tesla Power" and "Tesla Power USA."

What's even more bizarre is that the company claims to be headquartered in Delaware, USA, and claims to be a leader in cheap batteries with a strong presence in the Indian market.

However, in fact, Musk's Tesla company is also headquartered in Delaware, and this "Tesla Dynamics" company is purely an Indian company, and has nothing to do with Tesla in the United States.

A Tesla Dynamics representative told Reuters that they had existed long before Musk's company entered the Indian market and had been approved by the government.

"We never claimed to have anything to do with Elon Musk's Tesla."

Tesla told the court that it found out the Indian company had started using their trademark in 2022 and tried unsuccessfully to stop them from doing so, so it had to take legal action.

Tesla's trademark case against Tesla Dynamics will be heard in court on May 22, when we will see how India reacts.
