Joining the treaty allows for peace of mind? The ending of Portugal reveals the truth.

Updated: Jun 5

Portugal is a famous country in Europe. During the era of navigation, Portugal established colonies in the Americas, Asia, and Africa, becoming a maritime power.

During the colonial period, Portugal went through a phase of annexation by countries such as Spain and France, and ultimately achieved independence with the support of Britain.

However, although it is widely recognized that Portugal is no longer the former maritime hegemon, Portugal still maintains a false illusion of a "strong country".

After independence, Portugal shifted its focus to developing diplomatic relations, hoping to promote its own development by establishing good relations with multiple countries.

Although Portugal has joined many international organizations, such as the European Union, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and established cooperative relationships with Spain, Eastern European countries, and Portuguese speaking countries, it has not restored its former prosperity as a result.

In the rapid development of the 21st century, Portugal remains a moderately developed country in the European Union.

Portugal was founded early and can be regarded as one of the elders of Europe.

In 1000 BC, the Celts settled in the Iberian Peninsula, forming the embryonic form of Portugal.

Subsequently, the Romans invaded and occupied this land.

By 1270, Portugal's territory gradually improved and formed its current national borders.

In the era of navigation, with the opening of new shipping routes, economic and cultural exchanges have been carried out among countries around the world.

15. The 16th century is widely recognized as the "heyday of Portugal", when Portugal expanded on a large scale, established colonies, and achieved great success in the field of navigation.

However, with the passage of time, other countries surpassed Portugal in maritime technology, causing its position as a maritime power to rapidly decline.

In 1580, Portugal was annexed by Spain and later attacked by countries such as the Netherlands and Britain, causing it to fall into a predicament and no longer be a former strong country.

Portugal had maintained close relations with the United States and even cooperated with Axis powers during World War II, but turned to the United States after the war.

Despite joining international organizations such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Portugal's development is still limited.

In 2021, Portugal ranked 16th among the 27 member states of the European Union, indicating that its development still needs improvement.

This historical lesson tells us that even if we join multiple international organizations, we cannot conceal the lack of national strength.

To gain a place internationally, one must enhance their own strength.
