On June 9th, Modi was sworn in for a successful third consecutive term, marking a remarkable achievement in Indian electoral history.
However, this victory did not come easily. Modi demonstrated extraordinary determination and strategy throughout the campaign, employing various innovative methods to garner voter support, even elevating his image to near-deification.
During the pre-election phase, the Bharatiya Janata Party ingeniously crafted Modi as a semi-divine figure, the "guardian deity of India," prominently displaying this image nationwide.
This tactic attracted voters to come and "worship" him, further enhancing his electoral influence.
This move not only highlighted Modi's leadership charisma but also cleverly intertwined with India's religious culture, earning widespread attention and support.
In a May 25th report, UK's The Guardian revealed Modi's unabashed statement in an interview, where he claimed to be sent by "god" and pledged to dedicate himself until his mission is fulfilled, attributing everything he has done over the years to this divine entity.
Such remarks sparked intense debate and controversy across society, reflecting Modi's belief and devotion to divine powers on one hand, and prompting profound reflections on the relationship between politics and religion, as well as a leader's self-perception.
On May 31st, on the eve of the election, Modi further enhanced his mystical leadership image by choosing to seclude himself in a cave for a night of meditation, reportedly engaging in deep dialogues with the divine.
This action not only refocused media attention on him before the elections but also deepened the public's perception of his extraordinary background and wisdom.
Yet, despite the "deification" of Modi, the election results did not entirely meet expectations. The Bharatiya Janata Party secured only 240 seats, a decrease of 63 seats from 2019 and far below their target of 370 seats.
They also failed to reach the majority mark of 272 seats, necessitating alliances with smaller parties to form a coalition government in the future.
This election outcome once again underscored that while Modi attempted to portray himself as a divine figure, voters ultimately judged him based on policies and actual achievements.
Though his victory was secured, it fell short of the anticipated perfect outcome, revealing that "deification" in politics is superficial; true success requires political strength and practical action.
Nevertheless, Modi's re-election brings new challenges and opportunities to Indian politics.
He faces the task of advancing crucial legislation in a divided parliament, addressing economic challenges, and improving social welfare, among other significant issues.
As a dynamic and promising nation, India's future remains entrusted to Modi and his government's leadership.
One can only hope that he continues to achieve progress and accomplishments that benefit the Indian people in his upcoming term.
