On May 10, 2024, at the United Nations General Assembly, the resolution for Palestine's admission to the United Nations was passed, bringing joy to supporters of Palestine.
However, this may not necessarily be a good thing, as there are several precedents that should serve as cautionary tales.
The voting results of this United Nations General Assembly showed 143 countries in favor, 9 countries against, and 25 countries abstaining.
This is very similar to the voting results on the resolution regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict last year, which demanded Russia's unconditional withdrawal. The vote count last year was 141 in favor, 7 against, and 32 abstentions.
In last year's resolution on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, supporters of Russia heavily doubted the fairness of the vote and accused the United States of manipulating the outcome.
However, in this resolution concerning Palestine, the United States was one of the opposing votes.
Therefore, supporters of both Russia and Palestine can now have more confidence in the credibility of the United Nations.
Although the resolution was passed, Palestine is still not a formal member of the United Nations, and its rights are relatively limited.
However, this undoubtedly marks a significant step towards formal membership in the United Nations.
Palestine has been seeking to join the United Nations for many years, and this progress is partly due to the efforts of Hamas.
Since the establishment of Israel in 1948, the Palestinians and Israelis have long been in a state of conflict, with Palestine relying on international assistance.
However, in October last year, Hamas's attacks on music festivals and the killing and abduction of civilians disrupted this situation.
This event led to almost worldwide pressure on Israel, prompting them to decisively eliminate the Hamas organization.
As a result, the Israeli military launched an attack on Rafah, causing severe damage to Hamas but also leading to significant civilian casualties and a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
It can be said that this dire situation prompted the passage of this United Nations resolution.
However, I believe Palestine becoming a member of the United Nations is not necessarily a good thing.
Becoming a member state means having to comply with the United Nations Charter and international law while enjoying rights and fulfilling obligations.
Palestine has long relied on external assistance for livelihoods, with almost no domestic industries, and most of the population relies on aid.
However, after becoming a member of the United Nations, they must start to become self-reliant and embark on an independent path.
This is like a beggar who, originally unable to work due to lack of identification, can only rely on begging or receiving relief.
But once he obtains identification, he has a legal status and the ability to find work to support himself.
However, for the Palestinian people, this change may be very difficult because they are accustomed to a lifestyle of dependency.
Additionally, becoming a member state of the United Nations also means no longer being able to act arbitrarily as before, no longer being able to attack Israeli civilians or collude with other rogue states or armed groups.
If Palestine does not choose the path of peace and civilization, the United States and Israel can use the United Nations to impose sanctions on them, further restricting their actions.
We can look at Cuba, North Korea, and Iran, three countries that are United Nations members but have been under sanctions for decades, leading to a difficult standard of living for their people.
Therefore, although this United Nations resolution has been passed, supporters should not be too optimistic.
The Palestinian people still have a long way to go towards a peaceful and prosperous life.
