Portugal has two overseas territories.

The Azores, with a total area of approximately 2,344 square kilometers and a population of around 260,000, consist of nine volcanic islands situated between Portugal and North America in the North Atlantic Ocean.

This beautiful archipelago was first discovered by Portuguese explorers in 1427 and officially occupied by the Kingdom of Portugal in 1432.

Subsequently, after a period of Spanish rule (1580-1640), the Azores returned to Portuguese control.

Today, as part of NATO, the Azores play a strategic role, notably hosting important air bases for the United States in the Atlantic.

Madeira, located off the west coast of Africa, covers a total area of about 794 square kilometers with a population of approximately 320,000.

Formed by volcanoes, the main inhabited islands include Madeira and Porto Santo.

Since the 15th century, Madeira has maintained close historical ties with Portugal. After being occupied by Spain in 1580, it returned to Portuguese sovereignty in 1640.

Funchal, the capital of Madeira, serves as both a commercial and industrial hub in the region.

It is also the birthplace of Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo, renowned worldwide in the football arena.

The Portuguese Empire was historically the world's first global empire, reaching its peak with territories spanning 10.4 million square kilometers.

The Azores and Madeira, as part of its colonial legacy, not only witness Portugal's historical splendor but also symbolize its spirit of exploration and maritime power during the Age of Discovery.

The Azores' unique geographical position spans approximately 640 kilometers east to west. Most of the islands are volcanic in origin, resulting in diverse landscapes of stunning beauty.

Internally, the archipelago boasts rich and varied natural environments, abundant biodiversity, and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Major islands of the Azores include São Miguel, Terceira, Graciosa, and Pico, each offering unique natural landscapes and cultural characteristics.

Madeira, renowned for its mild climate and beautiful natural scenery, features diverse terrain—from lush mountains and steep cliffs to serene bays and golden beaches—showcasing the wonders and charm of nature.

Extensive nature reserves within the archipelago protect endangered species and unique ecosystems, attracting nature enthusiasts and eco-tourists from around the globe.

Beyond natural beauty, the Azores and Madeira possess rich cultural heritage. Portuguese traditions blend deeply with local characteristics, forming a unique and vibrant cultural landscape.

Residents preserve traditional lifestyles in fishing and agriculture while actively participating in modernization and internationalization processes.

Art, music, and literature have deep roots in these islands, with annual festivals and celebrations attracting a large number of tourists and art enthusiasts, serving as important platforms for cultural exchange and artistic expression.

Economically, the Azores and Madeira hold significant positions within Portugal. The Azores are renowned for unique agricultural and marine products such as distinctive beef, cheese, wine, and abundant fishery resources.

Madeira is famous for its high-quality wine and tropical fruits, particularly its internationally acclaimed wine products.

Tourism is a vital economic pillar for both archipelagos, annually drawing numerous visitors from Europe and worldwide who come to enjoy the beautiful natural scenery, rich cultural experiences, and diverse outdoor activities.

The Azores and Madeira are not only integral parts of Portugal but also precious treasures in the Atlantic Ocean.

They continuously contribute diverse values and significance to the world stage with their rich natural resources, unique cultural heritage, and strategic geopolitical locations.

As time progresses and economies develop, these islands will continue to play crucial roles in advancing and prospering human society, contributing to global progress and prosperity.
