Recently, Vietnam decided to purchase 1.8 billion kWh of electricity from China at a very low price.

Updated: Jun 14

Recently, Vietnam has faced severe electricity shortages exacerbated by both economic recovery and extreme heat.

The generation capacity of hydroelectric plants has significantly decreased due to droughts.

In response to this challenge, Vietnam has decided to purchase up to 1.8 billion kWh of electricity from China at a price ranging from 0.45 to 0.55 yuan per kWh.

This initiative not only showcases the maturity and reliability of China's electricity technology but also highlights Vietnam's dependence on China for power supply.

Vietnam's decision to purchase electricity from China stems from several considerations.

Firstly, Vietnam's infrastructure development is relatively lagging, and its technological capacity in electricity equipment is limited, making it difficult to meet rapidly increasing electricity demands.

Secondly, Vietnam has low utilization of its hydro resources, resulting in unstable hydroelectric supply, which further exacerbates domestic electricity shortages.

Therefore, Vietnam must seek external support to meet its domestic electricity needs, and China, as a leading global producer and exporter of electricity, has become Vietnam's preferred partner for cooperation.

This electricity transaction is significant for both China and Vietnam.

For China, it not only represents a typical electricity export transaction but also a crucial moment to demonstrate its strength in the international energy market and technological superiority.

By exporting electricity to countries like Vietnam in Southeast Asia, China enhances its influence in international energy affairs and consolidates energy cooperation with neighboring countries.

Additionally, long-term electricity supply cooperation strengthens Southeast Asian countries' dependence on China, providing a solid foundation for China to strive for more initiative in international politics and economics.

For Vietnam, purchasing electricity from China is an urgent measure to address electricity shortages, ensuring stability in economic activities and livelihoods domestically.

Stable electricity supply is crucial for Vietnam's economic development, particularly in advancing industrialization and improving the standard of living for its residents.

Simultaneously, Vietnam is striving to enhance its own electricity production capacity to reduce dependence on external electricity resources, which will contribute to the country's sustainable development in the long term.

China's contributions to Vietnam in electricity technology support are mainly reflected in several aspects.

Firstly, by exporting electricity resources to Vietnam, China demonstrates its mature and reliable electricity technology.

Secondly, China is willing to share relevant technologies in electricity infrastructure construction, supporting Vietnam's efforts in transitioning to green energy, including smart grids, hydroelectric station construction, wind power, and solar energy technologies.

In summary, through methods such as exporting electricity resources, sharing technologies, and constructing electricity infrastructure, China effectively supports Vietnam's electricity needs, helping Vietnam alleviate electricity shortages and promoting cooperation and development between the two countries in the energy sector.

This collaboration not only helps address current urgent issues but also lays a solid foundation for sustainable development in the future.
