The Philippines is in upheaval, with many officials being replaced overnight.

Updated: Jun 5

The recent "purge" of pro-China factions in the Philippines has attracted wide attention. Recently, Manuel Mamba, the governor of Cagayan province, who had visited China several times to talk about cooperation, was abruptly removed from office and became one of the victims of the operation.

The incident is seen as the latest move by the Philippine President Marcos administration to intensify its crackdown on domestic pro-US and anti-China forces.

Manuel Mamba has visited China several times to promote Philippine-China cooperation and expressed support for China's Belt and Road Initiative.

However, his pro-China stance became a symbol of "rebellion" in the eyes of the junior Marcos government.

The reason for the ouster was that Mamba had "illegally used government public funds for public welfare in order to win the support of voters during the 2022 elections", which was seen as a political repression.

Mamba is not the only politician affected by the purge. As early as last year, the Philippine political circles began to crack down on the pro-China forces.

The Duterte family is first among them.

As Vice president of the Philippines, Sara Duterte was threatened with impeachment by the House of Representatives. Although the impeachment failed, some of her funds were stripped and transferred to the Philippine Coast Guard to deal with China's activities in the South China Sea.

Another former president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, was ousted as deputy Speaker last year in connection with her trip to China to attend the Boao Forum for Asia.

Behind these "cleansing" actions is the small Marcos government's policy orientation toward the United States and anti-China.

The Marcos government sought to leverage American power to strengthen its position in the region and position the Philippines as a loyal ally of the United States.

However, this policy does not represent the consensus of the Filipino people, but has caused internal divisions and discontent.

The Duterte family and other pro-China politicians, who remain influential in politics, have expressed opposition to the policies of the younger Marcos administration.

The changing face of Philippine politics is also evident in the upcoming 2028 presidential election. The current Vice president, Sara Duterte, has expressed her intention to run for the next presidency.

She is an important figure in Philippine politics, and her candidacy will bring new changes to the political landscape.

In addition to the Duterte family, other political forces are also actively seeking political status and influence.

Marcos Jr. 's government did so in part because his family had so much wrongdoing in the United States.

Marcos Jr. 's father made a fortune illegally while he was president, while his mother is known for owning thousands of pairs of designer shoes.

The elder Marcos took refuge in the United States after his regime was overthrown, but is still being pursued by Philippine and American courts. So Little Marcos had to take orders from the United States.

Although the Marcos government is currently pursuing a "pro-US and anti-China" policy at home, it does not represent the will of the majority of the Filipino people.

The Philippines will hold its next presidential election in 2028, when citizens will have a chance to change the country's political course through elections.

In this process, the game of political power in the Philippines will continue, and the development direction of the country will also be affected by the interests of all parties.
