Why haven't any countries purchased China's anti-aircraft missiles?

Updated: Jun 5

China's military technological development has garnered worldwide attention, achieving breakthroughs and setting world records in various fields of research and development.

However, despite the continuous improvement in the performance of Chinese weapons, there are still shortcomings in terms of trade.

Especially in the field of anti-aircraft missiles, Chinese products are not popular in the international market. Why is this?

Looking back at the 20th century, China did not possess independently developed anti-aircraft missiles, and its technological level was still in its infancy.

But today, China's missile technology has made significant progress, possessing several important weapons that have formidable destructive capabilities in both air defense and precision range, posing significant challenges to adversaries' balancing capabilities.

However, even so, why are there still few countries interested in purchasing advanced Chinese weapons?

What are the reasons behind this situation?

Firstly, the best-selling anti-aircraft systems in the current market mostly come from the United States and Russia. These products are favored by many countries due to their long-term technological accumulation, good reputation, combat experience, and established compatibility with existing weapon systems.

The reason these countries do not consider purchasing Chinese anti-aircraft systems is not due to distrust; on the contrary, they do not doubt China's technology, and in some aspects, its functionalities and performance even surpass those of American and Russian products.

However, when purchasing anti-aircraft missile systems, technological compatibility and system compatibility are paramount concerns.

Western countries are more familiar with American and Russian weapon systems, and thus tend to choose anti-aircraft missile systems that are compatible with their existing weapon systems.

In contrast, China's military research and development system is relatively new, with technologies and usage systems different from those of the West, requiring more time to adapt and debug.

So far, the countries that have chosen to purchase Chinese anti-aircraft missile systems are mostly those that had not previously deployed American or Russian anti-aircraft weapon systems or those that can resolve compatibility issues with the system.

For example, Serbia previously deployed the SAM-6 type anti-aircraft system, which shares similar technical characteristics and system structures with China's KF3 anti-aircraft missile, making the purchase of Chinese missile systems smoother.

Additionally, countries like Morocco have always had great trust in Chinese weapons, hence they have no reservations about Chinese anti-aircraft systems.

Furthermore, countries like Pakistan and Uzbekistan are important partners in cooperation with China in weapons. They are very satisfied with Chinese weapons, which also prompts them to purchase Chinese anti-aircraft missile systems.

In conclusion, a country's choice of weapon systems is often influenced by various factors, including technical performance, compatibility, political factors, etc.

Although China's anti-aircraft missile technology continues to improve, it still faces some challenges in the international market. This requires continuous efforts from China in both technological and market aspects to win the trust and favor of more countries.
